What to Expect in Your First Driving Lesson

If it’s your first time behind the wheel, you might be wondering what actually happens, what you’ll be expected to do, and whether you’ll be driving straight away. The good news is that your first lesson is all about helping you feel comfortable, safe and supported as you get started.

Getting settled in
We’ll begin by going through the fundamental controls of the car so you can get familiar with how everything works. This includes things like:
the pedals
the gears
the steering wheel
the handbrake
indicators and basic controls
This gives you a chance to understand the car before you begin moving.
The cockpit drill
Before driving, we’ll also go through the cockpit drill.
This means setting yourself up properly in the car so you can drive safely and comfortably. We work on a routine called DSSSM -
Door - checking it's shut
Seat position
Steering position
Seatbelt
Mirrors
Getting this right is really important - these basic checks ensure you're able to be fully in control of the car.
Moving off and stopping
Once you’re comfortable with the controls and set up correctly, we’ll move on to the basics of actually driving.
In most first lessons, the main focus is on:
starting the car
moving off safely
basic clutch control
steering
stopping the car safely
We’ll always begin in a quiet, suitable area so you can build confidence with no pressure.
Don’t worry about getting everything perfect straight away - nobody does. Your first lesson is about learning the basics and beginning to get a feel for the car.
Will I be nervous?
Probably - and that’s completely normal.
A lot of learners feel a bit anxious before their first driving lesson, especially if they’ve never driven before, but there’s no expectation for you to know everything already - that’s exactly what lessons are for! You'll be guided through everything step by step - trust the process.
What should I bring to my first driving lesson?
The main thing you need is your provisional driving licence. It’s also a good idea to wear comfortable shoes so you can feel the pedals properly.
Most importantly, just come ready to learn!
How much will I do in the first lesson?
That depends on how confident you feel and how quickly you settle in. Some learners are happy to get moving fairly quickly, while others prefer to take a little more time getting used to the controls first. It's absolutely fine either way, and there is no correlation between people who do a lot in their first lesson and people who pass their test quickly - everyone learns at their own pace.
Final thoughts
Your first driving lesson is all about laying the foundations. You’ll get to know the car, learn the key controls, go through the cockpit drill, and start practising the basics of moving off, steering and stopping safely.
You don't need to be perfect, and you won't know it all on day one. Learning to drive is a process, and the first lesson is simply the first step.
